ADOPT DON’T SHOP!

I’m sure you’ve heard the saying, it’s pretty catchy.  It also holds a lot of reasoning behind it, and when the facts to support the reasoning are revealed, it’s pretty crazy to believe anyone would think differently.  For example, this fact you may find interesting – According to Animal World Network more than 12 million dogs and cats are euthanized in U.S. animal shelters each year.  12 million.  Let it sink in, it’s a pretty large number. 12 million cats and dogs’ lives are taken each year due to a number of reasons including, irresponsibility.

With that fact in mind, it begs the question as to why you would spend thousands of dollars at a pet store when for a fraction of what you would pay, you can adopt a wonderful new friend from your local shelter.  By the way, another ugly fact 99% of puppies sold in pet stores originate from puppy mills.  Technically, puppy mills are large-scale breeding operations that produce mass numbers of puppies for profit, but what the dictionary doesn’t tell you is how inhumane these horrible places are in their treatment of breeding dogs and puppies.  For this particular post I will not go into detail, but be my guest to Google it.  However, be aware, if you love your pets, what you find will sicken you.

I know you may have already raised an eyebrow, believe me I understand.  These two little statistics are only a few of the harsh facts as to why adopting from a shelter or rescue just makes more sense. Why would you buy if there are MILLIONS of perfectly adorable and loving pets sitting in kennels waiting to be loved. However, if these facts haven’t convinced you, the following is the number one reason of all…shelter dogs are the best dogs, plain and simple.

Not everyone agrees with me, I hear the argument all the time.  Shelter dogs are traumatized, they’re scarred, they can’t be rehabilitated or they’re older and they could never bond or learn now… Absolute ridiculousness.  To know the “tail” behind each traumatized face, each scarred body and every frightened demeanor, is to appreciate the blessings that surround you.  So, when one of these stories comes to live with you as a part of your life, the love and the bond you share with them becomes pretty immeasurable.  The thing is about shelter dogs is that their appreciation for a family and a home is unexplainable in words.  It’s almost as if they know you saved their life.  Ironically though, after some time, you begin to realize that it’s actually them who rescued YOU.

The point is pretty simple, Adopt Don’t Shop, take it from me, it will change your life, and if you’re going to adopt it mine as well be from close to home and it mine as well be a local friend…

Just like the sweet girl pictured.  Her name is SusieQ and she is waiting so patiently for a loving forever home.  SusieQ was one of the dogs taken from the hoarding situation in Gary a couple months ago.  She is very sweet, quiet and has lived with cats and other dogs in the past.  She is available for adoption at Lake County Animal Center and as much love as she gets there it just doesn’t compare to the love of a real family.  Come see SusieQ and you never know, she may be the one to change your life.
