NUMBER TEN, and most important Gustav Lesson
EVERY DOG DESERVES A SECOND CHANCE & THAT SECOND CHANCE CAN and WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE!
While reflecting back, I realized a while ago that my life is chock-full of second chances, especially personally, and if not given those chances, it would not be what it is today. A huge thank you goes out to all who continued to trust me even though my track record wasn’t exactly the cleanest. Looking at it now though, it’s funny, I had a track record and I was still given second chances. Sadly, however, Gustav (along with many, many others) have clean slates and are not always given those chances.
It’s really a shame because the most important lesson I’ve learned after adopting the boys is that every single sweet baby deserves it, and they deserve it even more than some people. They didn’t choose to be abused or neglected, they were innocent until some person or people treated them badly. This is especially true with Gustav. When he first came to us, he was INSANEly hyper, he would puppy bite all the time, was extremely fearful of men and showed signs of fear and territory aggression. Figuratively, he was my track record’s doggy twin and it was an instant connection.
At the time, I didn’t realize how much he would impact my life, but it became my mission to teach him some manners and that not all people are bad. A little time, a lot of love and a ton of patience, it’s working. He is on a routine, he looooooves the kids, the puppy biting has almost been completely curbed, and he’s a little calmer. The aggression has gotten so much better, although still a work in progress but, in all honesty, its only been 8 months and the miles he has come is extremely impressive. Ironically, during this process of rehabilitating Goose, although unaware, I have been rehabbing myself and the results are amazing.
So, is it possible to teach an old dog new tricks or change the thought process of an abused or neglected dog? To repeat one of our favorite phrases…H to the Y! and ten to one predicts that while you’re at it, it changes you too :) Thanks Goosey!!
